Updated: Sep 15, 2022

As much good information there is to find online about habits, there is also a ton of bad information.

Many myths have been written down and spread, but they are simply not true.

It’s important to know what is myth and what is reality.

Here are 5 Myth Busters

People Don’t Have Good Habits from Lack of Willpower

Even the people who put all their effort into forming new habits can struggle to accomplish it. Does that mean that they lack willpower? No way! Some people don’t have good habits because they don’t have the support that can help them. Other times it’s because people lack the proper resources or knowledge to put their habits into practice. People come from different backgrounds and not everyone has the ability to form good habits all of the time.

You Can’t Change Your Habits

For one reason or another, some people believe that there is no way to change certain habits. However, pretty much every habit one can have has the possibility to be changed. Does that mean that they are all easy to change? No. Some bad habits will take a lot more work to stop or change. For example, it is super hard to stop a smoking habit. It’s not impossible, but the addictive qualities of smoking make it hard.

Habits From Family Can’t Be Changed

Many bad habits can be inherited from family. Maybe it’s abusive parenting habits or addiction, but habits can be passed down through generations. However, like how we now know that any habit can be changed, even the habits from family can be changed as well. It will take time and effort, but they can be changed.

It Only Takes 21 Days to Form a Habit

The habit of learning a new language can happen in 21 days, sure. However, each habit can take its own time to form. Harder habits to form will take more time and there’s nothing wrong with that. Spend the amount of time that you need to form a habit, even if there are challenges along the way.

Just Set Goals and You’ll Be Fine

Habits take more than just goals to form. You have to work towards forming the habits that you have in your goals. It can be difficult and time-consuming, but you have to work to change or form new habits. Things don’t happen overnight.
